CENTRAL VIETNAM
PILGRIMAGE
(18 to 22 January 2027)
Footsteps of Vietnamese Martyrs and French Missionaries
The Vietnamese Catholic Church, rooted in the missionary efforts of the 16th century, has grown to become a significant religious community, representing about 7% of Vietnam's population. Despite enduring prolonged and severe periods of persecution across different eras, the Church in Vietnam has remained resilient and steadfast in faith.
Rev. Fr. Mitchel Joseph
Spiritual director:
On this pilgrimage to Central Vietnam, you will follow in the footsteps of Vietnamese martyrs and French missionaries. You will witness historical sites, experience cultural heritage, and see the lasting impact of their legacy on local communities.

This morning, we will travel to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang for a private Mass. It was here that the Blessed Virgin appeared to Vietnamese Catholics seeking refuge during a time of severe persecution, illness, and famine. She offered them comfort, encouraged the use of local “La Vang” fern leaves for healing, and assured them of her maternal care and prayers.
Next, we return to Hue City for lunch.
In the afternoon, explore Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty. Begin with a visit to the historic Imperial Citadel, the seat of the Nguyen emperors from 1802 to 1945.
Next, we will visit Thien An Monastery, set in a peaceful pine forest outside the city. Its unique architecture, influenced by Hindu temples, features open courtyards, tranquil prayer spaces, and statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary for quiet reflection.
Afterwards, depart Hue for Hoi An. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel. The remainder of the evening is at leisure, allowing you to relax or explore the charming Ancient Town at your own pace. Dinner will be on your own.

After breakfast, proceed to Tra Kieu Shrine for a private Mass. This significant Catholic pilgrimage site, known as the Shrine of Mary of Tra Kieu, was established in 1898. It honours Our Lady, who is believed to have miraculously protected the local Catholic community during the Vương uprising in 1885.
Afterwards, visit the Church of Tra Kieu and the Shrine of St. Andrew Phu Yen before returning to Hoi An.
St. Andrew Phu Yen (1625–1644), the Protomartyr of Vietnam, was a young catechist who assisted the Jesuit missionaries. Arrested during the persecution of Christians, he refused to renounce his faith and was martyred at the age of 19, becoming a lasting witness of courage and fidelity to Christ.
In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take in its timeless charm as you explore highlights such as the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, and the atmospheric old streets, rich in history and heritage.
