Journey of Faith in
the Mountain City of Grace
Chongqing, known as the “Mountain City,” holds an important place in the history of Christianity in western China. The Catholic faith reached the city by the early 18th century, and in 1702 missionaries established a lasting presence.

Over time, Chongqing became a centre of Catholic life, with churches such as St. Joseph’s Cathedral and various schools and charitable works serving the community. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, when Chongqing was China’s wartime capital, the local Church endured hardship alongside the people.
Today, its Catholic heritage remains a quiet witness to faith and perseverance.
