NORTH AND CENTRAL VIETNAM

PILGRIMAGE
(25 to 30 Nov 2024)

Footsteps of Vietnamese Martyrs

and French Missionaries

The Vietnamese Catholic Church, rooted in the missionary efforts of the 16th century, has grown to become a significant religious community, representing about 7% of Vietnam's population. Despite facing periods of severe persecution, particularly under communist rule post-1975, the church has remained resilient. Predominantly concentrated in the southern and central regions, it plays a vital role in the country's cultural and social fabric.

Rev. Fr. Christopher Loh O.C.D.

Spiritual director

On this pilgrimage to North and Central Vietnam, you will follow in the footsteps of Vietnamese martyrs and French missionaries. You will witness historical sites, experience cultural heritage, and see the lasting impact of their legacy on local communities.

  • 25 to 30 Nov 2024
    (5 days, 4 nights)

  • You will embark on a morning flight from Penang International Airport (PEN), with a layover at KLIA 2, before finally reaching Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the afternoon.

After airport clearance, you will head over for lunch before we visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in Hanoi. It was inaugurated in December 1886 by the French colonial government. Next, we will visit Cua Bac Church, originally known as the Church of Martyrs but more commonly referred to as Our Lady of Hanoi, Queen of Martyrs. We will have dinner and then check in.

    Overnight in Hanoi.

  • On the following day, after breakfast at the hotel, you will have a day trip to the Nam Dinh Province. Here you will visit the Bui Chu Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Mary Queen of the Rosary. You will also visit Phu Nhai Church, also known as the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, one of the four minor basilicas of Vietnam, and Kien Lao Church, a beautiful church dedicated to the Holy Family, showcasing Western architectural style in an Asian setting.

After lunch, you will visit Nam Dinh Cathedral. This 124-year-old structure is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The building is constructed in the neo-Gothic style, with additional murals and fixtures from the 1970s in the Art Deco style.

  • On day 4, you will travel to visit Our Lady of La Vang Shrine. This shrine is dedicated to Mary, who appeared to the Vietnamese Catholics dressed in traditional Vietnamese attire, offering them words of comfort and encouragement. She also provided guidance on using the leaves from nearby trees to treat their illnesses, which was seen as a miraculous intervention.

In the afternoon, you will transfer to Da Nang to visit Da Nang Cathedral. Also known as the Pink Cathedral due to its distinctive colour, it is one of the notable landmarks in Da Nang. It was built to serve the French Catholics living in Da Nang at the time.
