Nomadic Mongol Empire and the Catholic Church
(1 - 8 June 2026)

Mongolia Pilgrimage

Mongolia, a vast land of dramatic steppes, ancient empires, and deeply rooted traditions, offers not only breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage but also a unique chapter in the story of the Catholic faith. While Christianity first arrived through Nestorian Christians between the 7th and 10th centuries, it was during the Mongol Empire in the 13th century that Roman Catholicism gained a meaningful foothold. After centuries of interruption, the Catholic Church was re-established in 1992 following Mongolia’s transition to democracy. Today, this small but vibrant faith community consists of around 1,500 Catholics across eight parishes and a chapel. In 2023, Pope Francis became the first pontiff to set foot in Mongolia, emphasizing the Church’s closeness to even the smallest and most remote communities.
