Footsteps of Vietnamese Martyrs and French Missionaries
(19 to 23 January 2026)
Central Vietnam Pilgrimage
The Vietnamese Catholic Church, rooted in the missionary efforts of the 16th century, has grown to become a significant religious community, representing about 7% of Vietnam's population. Despite facing periods of severe persecution, particularly under communist rule post-1975, the church has remained resilient. Predominantly concentrated in the southern and central regions, it plays a vital role in the country's cultural and social fabric.

This morning, we will drive to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang for a private Mass. It was here that Our Lady appeared to Vietnamese Catholics who were taking refuge during a time of great persecution, illness, and hunger. After a time of prayer at the La Vang Marian Shrine, we return to Hue City for lunch.
In the afternoon, begin exploring Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty. Visit the legendary Imperial Citadel, where the Nguyen emperors ruled from 1802 to 1945. Following that, enjoy browsing the bustling Dong Ba Market, a lively place to find local products and souvenirs.
After that, we will visit the Thien An Monastery, nestled in a peaceful pine forest just outside the city. This historic Christian monastery features unique architecture reminiscent of Hindu temples, with open courtyards leading to serene prayer rooms. Take time to admire the striking statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary thoughtfully placed within the tranquil grounds.
In the afternoon, depart Hue and travel to Hoi An. Enjoy the scenic drive along the majestic Hai Van Pass — also known as the “Pass of the Clouds” — which offers breathtaking views of the East Vietnam Sea on one side and lush green mountains on the other.
